Windows and screens

Mini windows, the tray and snapping

The full window does not have to stay open. VoiceKeyboard can shrink to a small floating tube or meter, or hide in the tray.

The mini tube

Double-click the POWER tube. The window disappears and the tube alone floats over your other windows on a transparent background, glowing with your voice as before.

  • Click: start or stop recording.
  • Drag: move it.
  • Mouse wheel, or drag a corner: resize it. Brass corners appear when the pointer is over them.
  • Right-click: a menu with "Always on top" and "Normal size".
  • Double-click: back to the full window.

The mini meter

Double-click the needle meter on LIVE (it says "DOUBLE-CLICK TO MINIMIZE"). You get a small needle meter that floats over other windows. It moves and resizes like the mini tube and has the same right-click menu; double-click it to return. It does not start recording on a click; use the hotkey.

Only one mini window is open at a time. Each remembers its place and size. If you quit while the mini meter is open, the app starts in it next time; the mini tube always comes back as the full window.

The credits tab

When Soniox is your online engine, a small tab slides out from the mini window with CREDITS, the glass strip and the minutes left. On the free plan it shows WORDS, the words left today. It slides downward when the mini window is in the top half of the screen and upward in the bottom half, so a screen edge never hides it. The numbers are explained on Soniox credits and Free and Pro.

The tray

  • MINIMIZE, in the top bar of the window, hides VoiceKeyboard in the tray. The hotkey keeps working.
  • A left click on the tray icon shows the window, or hides it if it is open. It never starts or stops a recording.
  • A right click opens a menu: Open, Settings, Exit.
  • Hover over the icon to see the state: idle, starting, listening, stopping or error.

EXIT, or closing the window, quits the app and ends any recording. To keep dictating with no window, use MINIMIZE instead.

Snapping to screen edges

While you drag the main window or a mini window near the edge of the screen, it sticks to the edge. To drag freely, untick "Snap to screen edges" in SETUP → App → Startup.
