Engines and languages

Choosing the dictation language

The engine listens for the language whose key is lit. You choose which languages get keys, and each engine remembers its own.

The LANGUAGES row

Under the Model plate on the RECOGNITION panel is a row of keys, one for each of your languages, then AUTO and +.

  • One lit key is the language the engine listens for. Press another key to switch; a running recording restarts in the new language.
  • Dimmed keys are languages the current engine cannot hear. Pick another engine to use them.
  • AUTO lets the engine detect the language. It works only on engines that tell languages apart: Soniox, Parakeet v3 and Whisper. On the others it is dimmed.

Each engine remembers its own language. Set Google to Spanish and Whisper to AUTO, and switching between them brings each setting back.

Choose My languages

  1. Press + at the end of the row. The My languages list opens.
  2. Tick every language you dictate in. Several are fine, and at least one stays ticked.
  3. Press Done. Each ticked language now has a key.

The model chooser has the same list under "More languages ▾", and its cards then show which engines understand your languages.

The 33 languages are: Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

Which engine hears which language

EngineLanguages
Sonioxall 33, detected automatically and switched mid-sentence
Whisperall 33 as keys; on AUTO about 99
GoogleEnglish, Estonian, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian
Parakeet v3Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Ukrainian
VoskCzech, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese
GigaAM v3, T-oneRussian

If the engine knows none of your languages, a note says so: "This model does not know the chosen languages — dictating in …", naming the language it uses instead.

Vosk keys that download

Vosk has a small separate model for each language. With Vosk running, a key whose model is not on the computer yet has the tooltip "model not downloaded — press to download". Press it: the key fills with green from left to right while the model downloads, then the language switches on.

Mixing languages

For two languages in one sentence, use Soniox. Parakeet and Whisper on AUTO find the language of each phrase, so speak the other language as its own phrase. Google, Vosk, GigaAM and T-one hear exactly one language, the lit one.

The interface language is separate

The language of menus, tooltips and messages is set in SETUP → App: English, Español, Русский, 日本語 or हिन्दी. It changes at once and does not affect dictation. The engraved panel labels stay in English.
