Files and links

Transcribing files and video links

The FILES screen turns recordings into text with Whisper, on your own computer. It works for files on disk and for links to videos.

Transcribe one file

  1. Open FILES and choose FILE under SOURCE & OUTPUT.
  2. Press Browse... and pick the recording, or drag it from Explorer onto the screen. Supported: wav, mp3, m4a, flac, ogg, mp4, mkv, mov, webm.
  3. Check TRANSCRIPT DESTINATION. For a file the app suggests a .txt next to it, named after it with "-transcript" added. Save as... picks another place; "↓ Use folder" fills in the folder of the source.
  4. Under LOCAL MODEL, press "Choose model…" if no model is set yet, and download one. Large v3 Turbo is the recommended size; the sizes are compared on offline models.
  5. Press ▶ START. Press it again, now ■ CANCEL, to stop.

The text appears in the TRANSCRIPT area as it is recognised and is saved to the .txt file. Below it, Open file, Open folder and Copy do what they say. Clear empties the area only; the saved file stays on disk.

The three lights

SRC, OUT and MDL turn green when the source, the destination and the model are ready. If START does nothing, one of them is grey.

Video links

Choose LINK, then paste a link to a video page with Paste or drag it from the browser. With Pro you can add several at once, one per line or separated by spaces or commas. They run one after another, each with its own transcript and its own file. The video is downloaded to your computer and transcribed there, like a file.

Language and timestamps

LANGUAGE is set to Auto by default: Whisper works out the language from the first 30 seconds or so. If it guesses wrong, for example takes a Russian video for English, pick the language yourself.

With "Timestamps in the text" ticked, each phrase starts with its time in the recording, like [00:01:23], so you can find the place in the audio or video. Timestamps are part of Pro.

Several files at once

With Pro, hold Ctrl in the Browse dialog to select several files, or drop several on the screen. Each gets its own .txt: the destination becomes a template in which [filename] is replaced by the name of each source. BATCH PROGRESS lists every file with its stage (PREP, WAIT, LIVE, SAVE, DONE or ERROR); click a row to see that file's live transcript.

The free allowance starts again at midnight. If you paste several links on the free plan, only the first one is kept. Drag and drop works on both plans.

Files while you dictate

FILES and dictation can run at the same time. While a recording is on, a REALTIME ACTIVE badge appears on FILES; dictated words keep going to your window. FILES transcripts do not count toward the daily dictation words.

Speed depends on your hardware. SETUP has a Files page for that; see file transcription speed.
